-Final Chapter-
(No date given this time? Interesting...)

'Upon returning to Shirakawa, we told Hijikata what we planned to to. As Heisuke was already dead, it was a simple matter for him to leave the Shinsengumi. Hijikata didn't try to stop us, only watched us go in silence. I would have liked to remain with the Shinsengumi, but so long as Heisuke was by my side, I had no regrets. Sanan's defeat lead to the collapse of the Sendai Domain, and without their support the Great Northern Alliance crumbled.'
(Oh yeah, the Sendai Domain were technically allies...)

'The world swelled with excitement at the beginnings of a new government, and those who found themselves covered by the shadow of history were simply ignored at time marched forward. But as the world changed around us we remained hidden away from it, unaffected by the grinding wheels of progress. Out in the country, time passed slowly. Hiesuke's body had been ill-used by years of reckless fighting, but the quiet and peaceful atmosphere seemed to have at least something of a restorative effect on him. The bloodlust only came rarely, and now he was usually awake during the day and asleep at night.'
So... Is he becoming human again?

'Still, sunlight seemed to make him sleepy, and he would often doze off in the afternoon. When that happened, I considered it my duty to gently rest his sleeping head in my lap.'
(Aww...)

'...And more often than not, I would find myself falling asleep as well.'
(Again, aww...) (Are you sure that's not just a result of past Shimohi's legs "falling asleep"?) (...Monster.)

'During one such nap, I began to dream... Kondou and Hijikata stood in the front, followed by Okita and Saito, and then Nagakura and Harada. The rest of the Shinsengumi trailed behind them, and everyone was laughing...'

Shimohi Yukimura: "Mmm..."

'The light woke me, and I opened my eyes to see a smile that seemed like it belonged in my dream...'

Shimohi Yukimura: "...Did I fall asleep?"
(Sure sounded like it.) What!? Does my past incarnation lightly snore like I do?

Heisuke Toudou: "Yeah. You looked happy, so I thought I'd just let you stay like that for a little while."
(Aww...) ("Sleep cute"...)

'Usually I would have quickly checked my hair after waking up but for some reason I didn't bother. Instead, I rolled my head into Heisuke's warm lap.'

Shimohi Yukimura: "I had a dream about the past. Kondou was there, and Hijikata, and everybody else..."
Heisuke Toudou: "...Was I there with you?"
Shimohi Yukimura: "...Hm... I'm not sure. I thought you were at first, but maybe you drifted off somewhere later..."

'As I spoke I reached up toward the sky, as if I could catch one of the fleeting fragments of my dream... Another hand wrapped tightly around mine.'

Heisuke Toudou: "Don't worry. I'll always be with you. As long as the sun sets and the moon rises."

'Forever and ever...'

Heisuke Toudou: "Even after we're dead, I'll still love you."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Cue credits!) (I'm wondering something...) What is it Niyagi? (You know how you have both a male and female form?) Yeah, so...? (I know this is going to sound crazy...) It's okay, we've come up with crazier stuff than what I think you're about to say. (...but, what if your "male self" is actually just the result of "Past Shimohi" and Heisuke's souls fusing together?) (So, your theory sums up as "Male Shimohi is really a reincarnated Heisuke Toudou"?) (Argh! Now that you say it, it sounds incredibly stupid!) Even if that isn't the case, it's still an interesting idea. Anyway, that's the end of this Let's Play of Hakuoki! I might do a second round to see a different route... Except for Chikage Kazama's route. That's never, ever, going to happen!
