in", "Random Rambling Rants", and the "Overthinking Things" posts in
this count?) Yeah, why not? Those entries are part of the blog as well. Anyway, as this posts title suggests, I'm going to type about my thoughts on not just the anime adaptation of the prequel to this particular otome game series and the first season of the anime adaptation of the main otome game itself. (Shameless plug incoming... We also have a Let's Play running of the 3DS port of that very game right on this blog!) So, with out further ado, this is the end of Hakuouki (Reimeiroku and the first season of the main series)...

So... (Like the otome game itself) ...Hakuoki the anime is about a young lady disguised as a young man, Chizuru Yukimura, going to Kyoto to try to find her missing father but ends up hanging around the Shinsengumi and... (at least I think) ...falls in love with one of the Shinsengumi's captains. The anime seems to have stuck with Hijikata's route with, apparently, a few scenes from the other routes. While Hakuoki Reimeiroku the anime... (I assume like the game itself, it doesn't look like I'd actually be able to play it without importing it) ...is a prequel featuring a young man, Ryunosuke Ibuki, who... (How do I describe this?) ...Effectively becomes the servant of Serizawa, who's the head of a group called the Roshigumi (apparently the precursor to the Shinsengumi).
In both of those stories, there's this strange substance that's officially translated as "Water of Life" although it's more of a cultural translation as it more directly translates to "Strange Youth Water". Which, yes, the argument over which translation should be used between Akurei and Niyagi is kind of a running gag in the aforementioned Let's Play of Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi. And said Water of Life/Strange Youth Water is used to create Furies/Rakshasa, psudo-demons who have quite a lot of similarities with vampires; although I have noticed that they have a werewolf-like vulnerability to silver... Yes, there are demons in this series. The antagonists in the first game are demons. Although, yes, the player character is a demon as well... (Chizuru, not Ryunosuke)
As for overall opinion... Yeah, I found it entertaining. Enough so that I was inspired to not only play the game it was based on... (But to also do a Let's Play of it! Seriously, people should be reading our stuff more!)
