RWBY the First Impressions

Yes, I know I'm posting this a week late (gremlins got to my wireless router). And, yes, I'm counting Rooster Teeth's RWBY as an anime. I more see it as an art style than anything that can only be made in a specific country. So, yes, I also consider shows like Avatar (both The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra) and Code Lyoko to count as anime.

I've seen the Red, White, Black, and Yellow trailers; now let's see what kind of show all of those were leading up too...

"Man, born from dust, was strong...wise, and resourceful." Nice biblical reference there, along with the association between the darkness and monsters intent on 'destroying mankind'.

"However even the smallest spark of hope, is enough to ignite change...and in time, mans passion, resourcefulness, and ingenuity lead them to the tools that would help even the odds. This power was, appropriately, named...Dust." No relation to the "Dust" talked about in the His Dark Materials trilogy...I think...it's actually this 'verses applied phlebotinum (in the form of magic crystals and 'pixie dust')..but to the actual story here...

A bunch of thugs (or are they 'mobsters'?) 'waltz' into this shop, while Red (AKA Ruby Rose) is in the back reading a magazine (and doing something else as well) minding her own business, to rob it. The shopkeeper assumed the thieves were after money, nope. They were actually after the phleboti...oops, I mean Dust. One of the goons notice Ruby and order her to 'stick um up' when we find out what else she was doing. (Listening to music on her headphones; hence why she didn't hear that goon the first time.)

Once she 'can' hear him, Ruby innocently asks if he's robbing her...he says "Yes!", she says "Oh", then it cuts back to the front of the shop...where we see that goon from the last scene flying into some canisters of some kind. (Nice...!) Another goon pulls a gun...cut to the next scene, outside the shop, and he's kicked right through the window... (Double nice...!) ...and Ruby activates, 'that rifle scythe' (That proves it! Ruby is ****ing bad***!) including this cool twirling it around movement ending up with it cutting into the pavement below. (Huh...aren't you going to pull that out soon?) Cue the boss telling them to 'get her' and this awesome action sequence that's pulled off 'without' anyone getting cut in half or decapitated (like what happened to the 'werewolves' in the Red trailer), with a scythe like that, that's a feat that require skill...man!

The (mob?) boss escapes, but Ruby pursues him (with the shopkeepers permission...? Not sure why that's needed) to the rooftop, where a huge helicopter shows up (like a giant space flea from nowhere) to rescue him.

The boss shouts, "End of the line, Red!" before lobbing an 'uncut burn' Dust crystal at Ruby's feet and shoots it, but this mysterious lady jumped in and protected Ruby with a purple-colored geometric magic-looking barrier shield...who then shoot a bunch of purple-colored magic missiles at the helicopter; that's when the boss runs into the cockpit to alert the pilot that "We got a Huntress!" ...whatever that means... (We'll find out soon enough.) and they switch places while the 'Huntress' causes a magical hailstorm to manifest. And so the pilot (I'm going to refer to her as the 'Sorceress') and the Huntress fight a long-range magic battle and, of course, it's awesome! Ruby herself joins in latter in the fight by firing her rifle scythe, but still...

The boss and the sorceress both get away in their huge helicopter. (**** it!)

"You're a Huntress...can I have your autograph!?" Says Ruby, our knight who says 'squee'...only to get the lecture of a lifetime from her 'hero'. But also someone wants to meet her, and that someone points out her silver eyes (is this going to be plot-relevant somehow?). It seems that rifle scythes are "...one of the most dangerous weapons ever designed..." and the only other wielder of that weapon with skill like that is an old man...who just happens to be Ruby's Uncle...and an instructor at Signal Academy, where Ruby goes to school...because Ruby wants to be a Huntress, a monster-slayer (Ah, now we know what that is!), and part of that plan involves getting into Beacon Academy (What's with the schools with the light source-related names!?) where Ruby's (Older?) Sister goes to school...and it just so happens that the dude that wanted to meet Ruby is also the Headmaster of Beacon Academy...

Cut to on the airship to Beacon where Yellow (Yang Xiao Long) is giving Ruby a hug while gushing about how her "...baby sister is going to Beacon..." with her. (I knew it!) While Ruby is, indeed, excited about going to Beacon two years ahead of schedule; she's also worried that people will treat her differently. A news report comes on not only about the robbery Ruby intervened with, but also a civil rights protest that was interrupted by a terrorist attack; when the Huntress from before, Glinda Goodwitch, (Nice Wizard of Oz reference there!) appears in an announcement hologram welcoming everyone on the airship to...Beacon Academy! Oh, yeah, and some guy gets so airsick that he not only barfs, but gets some of it on Yang's shoe. (Ewww!)

Well, no matter if it turns out to be the opening or ending theme for the entire series, that song played at the end of this first episode of RWBY is so cool! Definitely watching Episode Two today! d(^_^)b
