Hi everybody and welcome to the first post of my first LP of a Pokemon game! (Hurray!) Huh...Akurei, due to this being an E-rated game, you can't cuss in any way, shape, or form. Not even censored cussing. (What the...!? I mean, that's not fair!) Due to the rating, that's just has to be the way it is. So, let's get started...
First of all, which language? English of course! And now to the title screen...
"Welcome to the world of Pokemon!"
As every single mainline game of Pokemon has started since Red and Blue versions...
"I am Augustine Sycamore, the Kalos region's very own Pokemon Professor."
And again, the tradition of the Pokemon Professors having tree-based names...
"This world of ours is widely inhabited by creatures known as Pokemon! These mysterious creatures can be found in every corner of our world... Some run across the plains, others fly through the skies, and others yet swim deep in the oceans... We live together with these Pokemon, lending our strength to one another to love and prosper. Let's get started with some quick questions... Are you a boy? Or are you a girl?"
(Good question. What with Shimohi having two forms, one male and the other female, this question can go either way.) Well, in the older games, you had no choice but to play as a boy. Still, I'm going with...boy!
"And what do you look like?"
And I'm given a choice between three portrats, one with pale skin, blond hair, blue eyes; one with...still looks like pale skin to me, dark colored hair (I can't tell if that's supposed to be brown or black), and grey eyes; and the last one has tanned skin...again with the brown or black hair, and brown eyes. I'm going with... the gray-eyed dude. My eyes aren't exactly that shade of gray, but they're still grey eyes none the less.
"Oho, I see. Would you tell me your name?"
That's easy! S...h...i...m...o...h...i..."Shimohi" and I'm done!
"So it's Shimohi, then? Did I get that right?"
-YES-
-NO-
Of course that's right!
"Shimohi... Tres bien! What a fantastic name!"
That's supposed to be French for...something, I don't know much of any French.
"Shimohi! Your adventure begins now! You are about to enter the beautiful Kalos region! Go and meet many Pokemon and people, and fill your life with rich experiences! Now let's go visit the world of Pokemon!"
For about at least the seventh time, if your only counting the main games. Yes, I've played a game from all the Pokemon Generations. Blue, Gold, Crystal, Sapphire, Leaf Green, Diamond, White, and White 2; in that order. And now X. My little brother typically gets the other versions.
So, this bird Pokemon, I have yet to figure out what the proper species name is, flew into my room and crashed into me waking me up. Let's see here...
'Shimohi checked the PC his dad gave him' (Oh, I get it, in Blue version, there was a hidden potion you can get before you even pick up your starter. Since then, Shimohi's had this habit of checking the PC at home before leaving his room just in case.)
'Adventure Rule No. 1 The X Button opens the menu! Adventure Rule No. 2 Record your progress with SAVE.'
And don't forget, "to save often".
'Shimohi looked in the mirror...'
(Distracted by your own sexy?) No, I just wanted to see if it does anything!
'...And changed out of his pajamas!'
(Not that you ever do that yourself without being reminded by company coming over...) And... what's the game system in front of my TV this time?
'It's a Wii U! The GamePad even has a screen!'
Great...my virtual self has a game system I don't... (Well, your virtual self in Blue version had either a NES or Super NES, and you never had that!) True enough. Well, usually checking the TV has some kind of a reaction.
'It's a movie about a 72-year-old man who went on a journey with his beloved cat Pokemon.'
Which cat Pokemon? I can think of several cat Pokemon... Meowth, Skitty, Purrugly... Well, time to go down stairs.
"Morning, Shimohi!"
Morning, mom!
"You sure slept well! All rested up from the move?"
Well, unless you count having a dream where someone kept asking questions about who I was and I stepped through a door and fell, only to wake up finding out that a bird Pokemon crashed into me, which is what woke me up. That had better not be my new alarm clock...
"It's about time you got going!"
Okay, but I forget, where exactly am I going?
"Why don't you step out and say hello to the neighbors?"
Well, life's an RPG, talk to random people. Hey, what's that?
"Cheerp cheerp! [insert music note here]"
Hey! You're the bird Pokemon that crashed into me this morning! Like I said, you better not be the new alarm clock! Still...time to step out of the house... and there's two girls outside my door, one blond the other brunette.
Blond Girl: Welcome to Vaniville Town!
Sounds like vanilla, tasty!
Blonde Girl: My name's Serena. I'm your neighbor.
Nice to meet you.
Brunette: And I'm Shauna! Great to meet you!
Same here.
Shauna: Guess what! We've come to get you!
For...what?
Serena: The esteemed Professor Sycamore lives here in the Kalos region. I was told he has a request for five kids, including us.
(Let me guess, the same request given to all the starting Pokemon Trainers in every region... Help fill out the Pokedex.)
Serena: But I'm a little surprised he knows who you are. You did just move to Vanille, after all.
That is a bit strange...
Shauna: We'll wait for you in the next town over! And you know what?!
What?
Shauna: We're going to get...a Pokemon!
Hurray!
Shauna: C'mon! Hurry! Let's go!
Right behind you!
I walk out the town gate and into Route 1 running straight to Aquacorde Town.
"Hey, Shimohi! This way! Over here!" A voice calls out to me from 10 o'clock. I head over there...
Serena: We were just taking about you!
(As the saying goes, "Speak of the Devil"...)
Serena: C'mon, have a seat! This is the meeting place, Shimohi. Here, let me introduce you. Everyone, this is Shimohi.
Fat Black Haired Guy: Wow... Shauna's description was spot on!
Serena: So, Shimohi, this is Tierno. He's got some serious dance moves, and... This is Trevor. He never misses a single question on his tests, but he's a little shy...
Nothing wrong with that...
Tierno: All right! Nice to meetcha!
Same here.
Tierno: You know, it'd feel like we're a closer crew if we call each other by nicknames. Can I call you S-Meister?
Huh... that could have another meaning... one that could break the rating...
Shauna: What? No way! He's a Li'l S, for sure!
...I'm not a rapper... besides, that's still problematic...
Shauna: What do you think, Trevor?
Trevor: What?! You want me to nickname someone I just met?!
Well... Trevor does have a point there...
Trevor: Shauna, you shouldn't put people on the spot like this. Well...how about something low key? Maybe...something like Big S...
And we're still having problems... (I don't see what the problem is...) (Shimohi's talking about Japanese slang...) (Oh...)
Serena: Why don't you decide what we should call you?
-Li'l S-
-S-Meister-
-Big S-
-Pick your own-
I've got my own idea that doesn't have any of the problems the others have... It's just what I pick as my name if there's a character limit of six or less... "Shimo".
Shauna: You want us to call you Shimo?
-Yes-
-No-
Of course, that one at least doesn't make me sound like I'm sadistic. (What!? That's what you meant!?)
Shauna: OK! [music note] Shimo fits you perfectly!
I know, that's why I suggested it.
Shauna: I'm sure we're gonna be great friends, so I'll call you that, too! Hey! Can we see the Pokemon now? I want to meet my new partner soon! [music note]
Tierno: I know, right? It was such a cool feeling when Trevs and I met our Pokemon! Hope you feel the same way we did!
And now we have to...
'Choose a Pokemon.'
Our choices are...
-The Grass-type Pokemon Chespin-
-The Fire-type Pokemon Fennekin- and...
-The Water-type Pokemon Froakie-
I've known what I was going to pick when I first saw the promo images, my choice is... Fennekin!
'Choose this Pokemon?'
-YES-
-NO-
Yes! Yes! A thousand times, yes!
'You chose Fennekin.'
Dah-dum!
'Recived Fennekin!'
Hurray! Firefox rules! (No, seriously, that's the web browser he's using while typing this blog post...Wait! You based your choice of Pokemon on a pun!) Besides, I thought Fennekin looked awesome! (That's how Shimohi usually picks his Pokemon...)
'Would you like to give your Pokemon a nickname?'
-Yes-
-No-
Of course, I always nickname my Pokemon! (Even though you never do the Nuzlocke challenge...) Let's see... Tsunebiki... Yeah! That sounds great! (Just what is that?) (The Japanese word for "Fox Fire", "Kitsunebi" but with the "ki" transposed to the end.) (And that's something else Shimohi does, nickname his Pokemon after related Japanese words and terms... *sigh*)
Shauna: So, you've decided on the nickname Tsunebiki?
-Yes-
-No-
Yeah, that's right.
Shauna: OK! My partner is Chespin!
(So Shauna's not the direct rival, so that leaves...) Serena...who's picking Froakie, because that's the only one left.
Shauna: Wow! We go together great! The two of us are just way-ay-ay too cute! [music note]
If you say so, besides cute... (Like beauty...) ...is in the eye of the beholder.
Serena: Nice to meet you, Froakie. I'm Serena.
Maybe I should take up the Psychic Trainer Class...
Serena: Because of you, I can be a real Pokemon Trainer. Thank you!
Trevor: Uh, pardon me, but I have something for you from the professor as well. I have something that will help you understand Pokemon on a much deeper level.
(And that would be the Pokedex, right?)
'Shimoh recieved a Pokedex!'
(Told ya!)
Trevor: Um, so you see... The Pokedex I just gave you is a high-tech device that automatically records the Pokemon you encounter! The reason you get one is because the professor wants us to go on a journey with our Pokemon and complete the Pokedex.
Which, in my years of playing Pokemon games ever since I've been in elementary school, I've never done even once in my life...
("I'm covering up my head!") (What?) Akurei here just doesn't want a boot to the head.
Trevor: To put it another way, it's an important mission from the professor. I'm sure of it!
Tierno: Oh lighten up, Trevs! You're way too serious sometimes. Um, Shimo... Please take this with you, too. It's a letter from the professor. He said you should give it to your mom.
'Shimohi obtained the Prof's Letter! Shimohi put the Prof's Letter in the KEY ITEMS Pocket.'
Tierno: All right! We're done with our errand for the professor. I guess Trevs and I will go look for Pokemon! Let's go, Trevs!
All right, see you later Terry and Trevs!
("Terry"?) It's my nickname for "Tierno" it's much easier to remember.
Serena: In Kalos, kids are chosen to carry a Pokedex and go on an adventure.
Adven-cha! (Warning! That webcomic has strong language in it!) (Anyway, that's how things go in all of the other regions as well. That practice isn't exclusive to Kalos.)
Serena: But you need to give that letter to your mom before you go.
Indeed. Well, off I go! But before I even leave town...
Shauna: Shimo, wait! You're gonna be my opponent in my Pokemon-battling debut!
Really!? Does this have to be done now!?
Shauna: OK, Li'l Chespin! It's our first battle! Let's win it with style!
Battle...start!
'You are challenged by Pokemon Trainer Shauna! Pokemon Trainer Shauna sent out Chespin!'
Go! Tsunebiki! Let's see... fight, of course! Avaliable moves are... Scratch, Tail Whip, and... Ember. (It's time to see a certian message alot...) Tsunebiki! Use Ember!
'It's super effective!'
(Of course!)
'Chespin used Growl. Tsunebiki's attack went down.'
Okay, it's Ember time! And Chespin goes down...And Tsunebiki leveled up!
'Tsunebiki grew to Lv. 6!'
I'm not going to bother listing the stats increases.
'You defeated Pokemon Trainer Shauna.'
Shauna: Hey! I wasn't done watching my cute Li'l Chespin yet!
'Shimohi received [Pokedollar]500 for winning!'
Shauna: You're amazing, Shimo!
Well, Tsunebiki did all the work, I just gave the orders.
Shauna: Here! Let me fix up your Pokemon. [music note]
'Tsunebiki was fully healed'
Not that he really needed it.
Shauna: Say hi to your mom for me!
(Indeed, I got to show off what I could do for once.) (Who's that?!) (Didn't you hear? Shimohi here named me "Tsunebiki".) (Wow! You can talk?) (What's that fox saying? All I'm hearing is strange chirps of some kind...) Hopefully now I can get home without any further interruptions...
And indeed, I made it home without incident...except when I actually got home. (Shimohi's mom even left the kitchen for this, this must be serious!) *facepalm* Anyway...
Mom: So! What did you and the neighbor kids end up doing? Wait one second, Shimohi! Is that a Poke Ball you have there?
Yeah. This holds my new friend, Tsunebiki.
Mom: You got your very own Pokemon? Lucky you! How about that? You're a Pokemon Trainer now, too! Congratulations!
(Isn't that... weird?) Not in this world it isn't, in fact, getting your first Pokemon is more like a rite of passage. (If you say so...)
Mom: Huh? A letter for me? It says it's from somebody named Sycamore. What could it be? A love letter?
No, most likely to ask permission if I can start travelling by myself.
Mom: ... ... ...Wow, what lovely handwriting... Hmm? What do we have here? A request... Oh, I see! Shimohi! We've barely unpacked, and all kinds of exciting things are happening! OK! Let's get you and Fennekin ready for your journey!
(Hey! I have a name...)
Mom: Here you are, Shimohi. I even packed a change of clothes. My, what an unexpected turn of events! It's just like a sudden last burst of speed from a racer in a Rhyhorn race! You made friends! You met your Pokemon!
(Hi there.)
Mom: And now you get to take a lap around Kalos! Oh, and don't forget this!
'Shimohi obtained the Town Map! Shimohi put the Town Map in the KEY ITEMS Pocket.'
Mom: You know how to use a Town Map, right?
-Yes-
-No-
I think I can figure it out myself, but thanks for offering.
Mom: That's my boy! Select the Town Map from your Bag whenever you want to use it! I don't know what this Professor Sycamore wants you to see on your trip... But taking a journey with your Pokemon is a really wonderful experience.
Well, time to hit the ro... What!? I thought that was just a statue or something!?
Rhyhorn: Roaaah!
(Well, that explains that earlier metaphor.) (Woah!) I doubt Rhyhorn here means us any harm.
Mom: Ha ha ha! What a card! I guess Rhyhorn just wanted to give you a big send-off for your journey! Well, it has known you since you were born, after all! Good luck, Shimohi! Go for broke! And don't worry! You'll have Pokemon by your side, so you'll be fine!
Yeah and... woah! (It seems that you can actually ride the Rhyhorn.) (Coming from you, that sounds dirty.) (*head tilt* Why?) Well time to look around town before I leave... First of all, this sign.
'Vaniville Town A town whose flower is about to bloom.'
Let's see... it seems that Serena lives next door. (Of course!) So, who lives in the house on the other side of the road out of town?
Brown-haired boy: Vaniville Town is pretty nice, right? The Kalos region has lots of cool towns! I want to see them all when I get big!
So...who lives in this house? I walk in and talk to this hiker dude...
Hiker: Oh, would you look at that! You've got on a pair of Running Shoes, my young friend! I can't see a pair without thinking of the old jingle they used to play in their commercials... "To dash, dash, dash! In a flash, flash, flash! Press the B Button to dash in a flash!" Yeah, just press that B Button!
(Interesting way to fit a tutorial in there...) Next, this other dude.
Guy: If the time comes, I hope I can entrust my son with a Pokemon. Going out on a Pokemon journey really helps you mature, you see.
(See what Shimohi meant by that "rite of passage" stuff.) Well, upstairs is this kid and, I assume, his mom. The mom seems to be busy, so I'll speak to the kid...come on! Slow down! Oh wait, I can just stand here I know he's going to go and talk to him that way.
Kid: That Rhyhorn's, like, super-duper big! I wonder how it does in battle!
I don't know but once I leave this town, I have... "An awful lot of running! To do--- oooo!" (And I'll be there every step of the way!)
Who's this guy in Aquacorde?
Random Guy: Do you love Pokemon?
-Yes-
-No-
Of course I love Pokemon. (Shimohi wouldn't be playing this game if he didn't.)
Random Guy: Me, too! Aren't they great?
I walk down the stairs to the fountain plaza and I spy a sign!
'Aquacorde Town Water and civilization in harmony.'
And here's a schoolgirl...
Schoolgirl: I play with my Pokemon and pet it!
I'm sure you do...Oh! Another sign! (If you haven't read the First Impressions post for Shin Megami Tensei IV, there's something you need to know. Shimohi has this habit of reading every sign he sees.)
'Trainer Tips! Pokemon gain Experience Points and grow stronger by battling.'
Yo! Another Hiker dude, what's up?
Hiker: Hey there! Looks like you found somebody at home to help you pack! Oh, and make sure you bring a bunch of Poke Balls and Potions, all right?
That reminds me, to the nearest Pokemon Center! Away! Wait? What's with this sign with a camera symbol on it?
'The photo spot is still under construction.'
Okay, back to the search for a Pokemon Center! What's this shop with the red awning? I walk inside and talk to the person behind the counter.
Employee: How can we humans possibly feel well when our Pokemon aren't feeling well? Come see me anytime your Pokemon aren't doing well. I'll take care of them!
Well, that was strange... And now for the shop with the green awning...
Employee: Welcome! We sell only the best Potions!
-Buy-
-Sell-
-No thanks!-
Well, better stock up on potions, or at least check up on how much they cost... 300 per spray bottle? Sounds fine to me, I have [Pokedollar]3,500!
Item Shop Employee: Potions? Certainly. How many would you like?
Let's see the price for five potions is... 1,500. Okay, I'll take that.
Item Shop Employee: Here you go. Thank you.
'You put away the Potions in the MEDICINE Pocket.'
And... my bees wax is done here.
Item Shop Employee: Is there anything else I may do for you?
No thank you, have a nice day!
Item Shop Employee: Please come again!
I cross to the other side of the lower plaza and...I think I've found the Pokemon Center... (Interesting that Game Freak's gone back to The Pokemon Centers and Poke Marts being separate buildings...) And why not save so far? Decided to take a look at the town map, 'cause why not? And I found an interesting location on here...
'Pokemon Village Legends say a place exists where Pokemon live in hiding, but no one has ever found it.'
Then why is it clearly marked on this town map? (Maybe it's just where the legends claim it's located.) Well, that's a place I definitely wish to see! So, on to the route to the north! Oh no, that other hiker I talked to earlier wants something with me...
Hiker: Hey, Pokemon Trainer! If you set foot in the tall grass, a wild Pokemon will pop out!
Huh...I already know that.
Hiker: But you'll be fine, because your Pokemon partner will battle for you!
Yeah, I know that as well. And I trust Tsunebiki with all my heart. (Aw...thanks...)
(Entering Route 2: Avance Trail!) Just what will come out of the grasses? Two steps in and I find... a Pidgey! (Yeah! Let's do this!) (Dang! It's not a Shiny!) Let's see...dang, I don't have any Poke Balls. So, since fire doesn't have any special advantage against normal or flying types... Tsunebiki! Use Scratch!
'The wild Pidgey used Tackle.' Then again, as I recall using moves of the same type as the Pokemon using it deals extra damage. So, Tsunebiki! Use Ember! And the Pidgey tackles again. And let's finish this off with a scratch!
'The wild Pidgey fainted.'
Well, looks like I'll have to get Poke Balls at the next town. Oh hey! It's Shauna and Serena again!
Shauna: Oh! Hi, Shimo!
Yo, what's up?
Shauna: Come learn how to catch Pokemon with me!
(Hopefully you'll do better than that old man in Viridian City...)
Shauna: Serena's mom and dad are amazing Trainers! That's why she knows so much about catching Pokemon and battling.
Serena: Well... Mom and Dad may be good, but that has nothing to do with me. OK, now watch carefully, you two.
And a battle insues between Serena's Fletchling and a Bunnelby...where she weakens the Bunnelby with a tackle from her Fletchling and then throws a Poke Ball at it and...it's caught!
Shauna: Wow! The Pokemon went INSIDE the Poke Ball?!
*sweat drop* Really?!
Serena: Shauna... What do you think your Chespin is inside of right now? Here, I'll share some Poke Balls with the two of you.
Hurray!
'Shimohi obtained Poke Balls! Shimohi put the Poke Balls in the Items Pocket.'
(Maybe it's a good thing that Pidgey earlier wasn't a Shiny Pokemon...)
Shauna: Poke Balls! [music note] Do you think I can catch Pokemon with them, too?
Well, that's what they're made for.
Serena: Sure. You can catch the Pokemon around here just by throwing a Poke Ball near them.
Shauna: OK! If I find a cute Pokemon, I'll throw lots of Poke Balls at it, and then we'll become friends! [music note]
No, you have to weaken the Pokemon first. Otherwise it'll just escape, wasting your ball.
Serena: When you catch a wild Pokemon, it makes your Pokemon stronger, too.
(Well, if that's true, that'll be a welcome change from the previous generations... Yes, Shimohi's started playing during the first generation, but he's not a Genwunner!)
Serena: Good luck!
Well, let's see what I can catch first! Let's see, I run in the next patch of grass for a bit and... A wild Scatterbug appears! Woah... Let's see...Ember? (Hopefully that doesn't one-hit faint it.)
'It's super effective!' And it does one-hit faint it. Well, at least Tsunebiki powered up. (Yeah! I've gotten stronger now.) Next patch of grass and... A wild Zigzagoon appears! Well, this would be a good contrast for Tsunebiki. It's scratching time! (Really? You just paraphrased a line from another kids franchise from when you were growing up.) Yeah, I did.
'The wild Zigzagoon used Growl. Tsunebiki's attack went down.' Well, at least I'm sure that we won't make this little lady faint in the next scratch attack. And that Zigzagoon used growl...again. Now that her HP is in the red, it's time to throw that ball! And... *focuses* The Zigzagoon is caught! (Booya!) (Yay! I have another friend!)
'Registration completed! Zigzagoon the Tiny Raccoon Pokemon: It walks in a zigzag fasion. It's good at finding items in the grass and even in the ground.'
'Give a nickname to the caught Zigzagoon?'
-Yes-
-No-
Of course, but what to name her... Let's see... "Tanuki" plus "Leaf" or "Ha" but given the same rearrangement as Tsunebiki's name and we get... "Nukibata". (How do you get "Nukibata" from "Takuki" plus "ha" with the "Ta" moved to the end?) That's because, for some reason when words that start with an 'h' are combined with another word, that 'h' turns into a 'b'. (Huh...hello...) I'm surprised you didn't notice that with Tsunebiki's name. (Uh...Hi...Shimohi just named me Nukibata... *blush* ...that's a rather unusual name isn't it...) (Yo! Nice to meet you Nikibata. I hope we can be great friends.) (Y-yeah... *blush*) (I know, Shimohi pick odd names, but he loves all of ya.) Well, got to heal the new team mate.
'Nukibata healed 12 points.'
Let's move on, shall we? Let's see...this sign reads "Santalune Forest Ahead." Most likely to find a lot of bugs here... Tsunebiki is going to have a field day. (All right!) To the... oh no! Someone spotted me!
Youngster Austin: When two Trainers' eyes meet, a Pokemon battle must begin!
'You are challenged by Youngster Austin! Youngster Austin sent out Zigzagoon!' And I...send out Nukibata... Oh dear... that opposing Zigzagoon's two levels stronger than Nukibata. Well, one attack from Nukibata then switch to Tsunebiki...and Nukibata only knows Growl and Tackle. (No mystery which attack to use first...) Nukibata! Use Tackle! But first the opposing Zigzagoon used Tail Whip, and Nukibata's defense went down. Now I have to call in Tsunebiki! After Tsunebiki was swapped in, the opposing Zigzagoon used Growl. Well, that doesn't affect special attacks... like Ember! And the opponent uses Growl again. Let's finish this with a second Ember! And he's down! Tsunebiki gained some experience while Nukibata gained enough to level up! And I've beaten Youngster Austin!
Austin: You should've told me that you were THAT strong!
Well, like you said, "When two Trainers' eyes meet, a Pokemon battle must begin." It doesn't matter how strong the opponent you're challenging is, a battle must happen.
'Shimohi received [Pokedollar]120 for winning!'
(Shame on you! Taking money from a kid!) What!? He challenged me! Well...?
Austin: Time to get in some practice with the wild Pokemon in the tall grass! Oh! I'd better heal up my Pokemon first!
Exactly! And Nukibata needs to do some training herself. (Yeah... that was really embarassing... *blush*) (Why are you dashing back to Aquacorde?) Healing at the Pokemon Center, it is free after all! (You are your father's son...) Oops, looks like I got the Pokemon Center and the Poke Ball shop mixed up. Well, time to head to the forest! (What about training?) I'll just do switch training 'till I'm sure Nukibata can handle herself. I'm in the forest and then...
Shauna: Wait up! [music note] Let's walk together! I feel like something exciting will happen if I stay by you! [music note]
(Let me guess, it's going to be time to introduce the Evil Team of the region soon...) Sign!
'This is Santalune Forest. Keep an eye out for dropped items!'
And I see one to the right!
'Shimohi found a Potion! Shimohi put the Potion in the MEDICINE Pocket.' Looking around for items while trying to avoid eye contact and...there's another one! But just before I could get out of the grass...
A wild Panpour appeared! A water type, bad idea to send Tsunebiki out against that one. At least Nukibata's at the same level. (I-I'll do my best!) Tackle! But first the Panpour used Leer... So...Tackle it again! And this time the Panpour uses scratch, and... Nukibata's only a little bit better HP-wise than the Panpour, well, it's the only tactic we have. Another Tackle and another Leer... A Leer and a Tackle...and the Panpour's down!
I found another Potion but it seems that Shauna can heal my Pokemon whenever I want. Hurray! (Yay!) (Yay...) As a matter of fact, I'll use that service right now. I'd rather not have my friends faint on me. Let's see... a little more exploring and I find... an Antidote! Forest means bugs, which means poison. Good find there! And on the way out of that patch of grass...
A wild Caterpie appeared! Ah... the Caterpie... (Enough of the nostalgia fog!) Right! Nukibata! Use Tackle! And...the Caterpie also uses Tackle. Once more and maybe I can catch him! Nope, the Caterpie goes down... At least Nukibata powered up to level five... (Yay!) ...and learned Tail Whip. (Aw man...) And...Looks like Trevor's going to try to ambush us. But... he sticks out like a sore thumb... always save before doing anything potentially stupid... but might as well humor him...and he's not noticing me. Well, might as well warn him that he isn't at good at hiding as he thinks he is.
Trevor: If your Pokemon are weak, you should use a Potion.
Oh, so that's what it is. Never mind... Let's see what Terry's up to...
Tierno: This Youngster challenged me to a Pokemon battle! Let's go!
Okay... moving on then...
Shauna: Oh! Hang on one second, Shimo! [music note]
One Shauna running into the nearest grass patch and a screen wipe later...
Shauna: Look what I found, Shimo! I'll give it to you! I love puzzles, so I watch everything more closely than you might think! [music note]
And I get... a Paralyze Heal. Well, I'm not going to look a proverbial gift Ponyta in the mouth... (I think that's supposed to be "gift horse".) But a Ponyta is a fire horse, so it works! (*sigh*...) Anyway... that Youngster is side glancing at me and I bet that as soon as I make one step in front of him... it's battle time. I knew it...
Youngster: Come on, Scatterbug--let's powder this punk!
'You are challenged by Youngster Joey! Youngster Joey sent out Scatterbug.'
Hey! What happened to your top percentage Rattata? Anyway... Go! Nukibata! It's TACKLEIN' TIME! (Now it's Fantastic Four...) So far this looks like a battle of the Tackles... and in two or three turns Nukibata wins! Do I switch Nukibata out while Joey sends in a Fletchling? Nah, I think Nukibata's doing fine so far.
So...yeah...it was a Fletchling that crashed into my bed this morning... (And... you're carrying a grudge against Fletchlings because of that.) Nope, this isn't the same one. Besides, by now I think that crash was just an accident. Anyway, on with the Tackle-fest! Yes! I got a critical hit on the first one! And with the second Tackle, that Fletchling is down! (You sure you're not carrying a grudge...?) I'm sure.
Joey: Cheer up, Scatterbug! We lost this time, but we'll get the next one who comes along for sure!
'Shimohi received [Pokedollar]72 for winning!'
And Joey says...
Joey: Keep lots of types of Pokemon with you, and you'll never get caught off guard by a type weakness.
Terry runs by saying...
Tierno: I found a wild Pokemon in the grass!
Really, I run to find him and...
A wild Pansear appears!
I already have a fire type, but why not? Anyway, Tackle time! Three rounds later and it's down! And Nukibata levels up! (*blush* I'm even stronger now...I wonder what I can do now...?) Well, I heal up and...
A wild Pikachu appears! Oh my Arceus! I have to catch this one! Nukibata uses Tackle...but the wild Pikachu's Static paralizes Nukibata, then again I don't think that Pikachu can survive another Tackle anyway... So I'm just going to throw a ball and pray to Arceus that it works... *focuses* And...it works! Yes! Thank you, Arceus!
'Registration completed! Pikachu the Mouse Pokemon: It raises its tail to check its surroundings. The tail is sometimes struck by lightning in this pose.'
So, Pikachu that could not only survive lighting strikes but also use the charge from the strike latter were much more likely to survive to have offspring... very clever... and, yes, this she's getting a nickname! Let's see... "Sparkle"! (That's an English word...) But that's effectively what a Pikachu says when it says "pika-pika!", which is the Japanese Onomatopoeia for "Sparkling" (Fair enough.) (Yo! Welcome to the team, Sparkle!) (What!? Are you implying I'm a noob!?) (Woah! Let's just take it easy here...) (Yeah, it's a better idea to save the attitude for the opponents.) (Who asked you!?) (Why are you getting that Pikachu angry at you?) (And this lady here's an idiot...) And... now time to try to talk to Terry...
A wild Pansage appeared! For crying out loud! A couple of Tackles and one Poke Ball later...
'Registration completed! Pansage the Grass Monkey Pokemon: It shares the leaf on its head with weary-looking Pokemon. These leaves are known to relieve stress.' And, as usual, this Pansage is getting a nickname! Let's see... "Monkey" and "Heb"... "Saru" and "Yakuso"... How about this time I transplant the "Soo" at the end of "Yakuso" to the beginning? ... "Sosaruyaku" ... That's kind of long, and... it fits! (Hey! Welcome to the team, dude.) (Duuude! Watch these cool moves! *does a silly dance*) (Just what in the name of Arceus does he think he's doing?!) (Wow! That looks so cool...you know that reminds me of something...) "Wow! Is right, my team's a ragtag bunch of misfits... (I have no idea what they're saying, but your team is getting weirder and weirder.) And now...
A wild Scatterbug appeared! How often is this going to keep happening!? Sparkle! Use Thunder Shock! (Feh, whatever.) The Scatterbug used Tackle and...they have the same amount of damage. So I guess that Tail Whip will help now. (Take this!) The Scatterbug used String Shot. (And now I'm covered in gross!) Now use Thunder Shock again! But the Scatterbug used String Shot again first. (How dare you do that again! Have a bit of shock!) I think it's working! Again! And...the Scatterbug used String Shot first...again. (I'm going to pwn you!) Wait it's weak enough to catch! (Wait, what!?) And it works! (But I wanted to pwn it!)
'Registration completed! Scatterbug the Scatterdust Pokemon: When under attack from bird Pokemon, it spews a poisonous black powder that causes paralysis on contact.' (I don't think we need to tell you if a newly caught Pokemon will be getting a nickname or not by now...) Let's see... "Black" and "Mess"... "Kuro" and "Yogore"... "Royogoreku"...nah! "Rekuroyogo"... Actually, "Reku" sounds perfect! (Hey! We have another new friend! Hurray!) (Th-thank you...) (So, now 'Miss Sticky Gunk' thinks she's all that just because she got onto the team...) (No, that wasn't what I meant...) (Well you give it a rest, Sparkle!) (Well excuuusssee me, Princess!) (And...now Sparkle's being as annoying as Link in that heaven awful cartoon...) (Hey! You're acting like the Princess here!) (Isn't your team supposed to be fighting other Pokemon, not each other?) *sigh* ...Hopefully they'll work it out amongst themselves... Hopefully now I can talk to Terry...
Tierno: I wonder what kind of dance works best for a crew with Pokemon in it.
Break Dancing, of course!
Well, that wasn't too interesting. Moving on... Going though a different patch of grass and...
A wild Scatterbug appeared! I already have one, so Reku, show this one what you're made of! (If you believe I can, I will...) Three Tackles latter, and Reku gains some XP.
And it's that lady I saw earlier...and she asks if I have any Poke Balls. Well, I didn't use all of them yet...
Lady: Here you go.
Oh, she was asking if I ran out of Poke Balls...and I end up getting one. Well, the more friends, the better! Moving on and... I see another challenger... *step* ...
Lass: Your Pokemon are in for a shock!
Let me guess, you have a Pikachu with you...
'You are challenged by Lass Anna! Lass Anna sent out Pikachu.' [sarcasm] How did I know... [/sarcasm] Go...Reku...Yeah, this is not in Reku's favor... Tackle anyway, then switch out. The opposing Pikachu used Thunder Shock and then Reku Tackled it...only to get paralysed by the Pikachu's Static. Nukibata! I choose you! And she arrives to a Tail Whip. Now it's time for a Tackle-fest! On the second Tackle, Nukibata got paralysed herself. Now hopefully she can still get one last attack in to finish this fight! And... yes! The opposing Pikachu is down! Nukibata powered up to level seven! (And now we're equals.) (Uh...thanks...I think...) and Reku speeded past levels three and four up to level five! (That's amazing!) (Meh, that's just the result of sitting into a battle with a much stronger opponent...)
Anna: Eep! I was the one who got shocked!
'Shimohi received [Pokedollar]120 for winning!'
Anna: Not just anyone can find a Pikachu, you know? It's OK--you don't have to compliment me!
Then I won't, besides, I have a Pikachu as well. Her name is Sparkle! (Did you just refer to me as a thing!?) Okay, so she's not exactly the most sociable Pikachu in the world, but she's my Pikachu and my friend none the less. (Huh...? Still, I'll show that black bug just who's the boss around here...) I know a battle'll happen but...I just have to know what's down this path!
Lass: The best part about Pokemon battles is that they can happen anytime, with anyone, anywhere!
'You are challenged by Lass Lise! Lass Lise send out Weedle.' Go Sparkle! Earn that promotion! (You don't have to tell me twice!) It's time for a Shock of the Thunder variety! And thw Weedle used Poison Needle...and Sparkle doesn't get poisoned! (Yeah! In your face!) It's a repeat of the last round and...Go Sparkle! You only have to use Thunder Shock one more time! (And the bug is going down!) And Lise is about to send in Bunnelby, will I (No! I will have my promotion! Now get ready for the shock of your life, rabbit!) (Look who's talking...) (What do you mean "talking"? All I'm hearing is it saying parts of it's species name.) That Bunnelby used Leer several times by now... (It's a trap!) ...exactly! So, Sosaruyaku, take over from here! (But what about my promotion...!?) (Yo! Yo! Yo! I'm gonna shred this place up, yo!) Now what's up with that Agility-fest from the opponent...? Never mind, we win!
Lise: I've got to keep battling and training up my really awesome Pokemon team!
'Shimohi received [Pokedollar]96 for winning!'
Lise: Duh! I can't believe I forgot that Potions can be used even during a battle!
But I didn't, and I prefer not to if I think it would be a waste of an action.
And I find...a Poke Ball. And...Shauna is amazed that I caught a Pikachu. And, I found a Potion.
Lady: So, you're the first to arrive.
What's this about? Who are you?
Lady: Looks like my new neighbor is someone with a lot of potential.
Wait... So you're Selena? Sorry, I didn't recognise you!
Tierno: The way Pokemon move--it's just incredible! I want to show off some of that spirit when I dance!
Trevor: Tierno... Could you think about something besides how Pokemon move for once?
Shauna: We're all here! Let's go to Santalune City!
Yeah! Let's go everyone! (Yeah!) (Okay...) (Okay...) (Out of our way!) (Here comes the Crazy Train! Choo-choo!) (Now that you mention it, yeah these games do tend to railroad...) (All I heard and saw was a monkey chirping and imitating a steam train conductor for some reason...) Yeah, our party is kind of a Crazy Train. So all aboard!
Shauna: What are you all going to do?
Trevor: Why, look for Pokemon, of course! The professor did ask us to complete the Pokedex, after all. And furthermore, different Pokemon prefer living in different places. To put it another way, it's a chance to find different Pokemon than the ones in the forest!
Tierno: I'll bet different Pokemon will use different moves. I sure want to see lots of moves.
Shauna: What are you gonna do, Serena?
Serena: I'm going to go to Santalune City's Gym and challenge the Gym Leader. You see, Pokemon Trainers find out how good they are by challenging the Leaders in Pokemon Gyms.
Shauna: Wow! You sure know a lot!
(That or she has the equivalent of several generations of knowledge accumulated over several past lives. Like Shimohi, over here.)
Serena: It's because Mom and Dad taught me so much.
(...or that's a better in-universe explanation.)
Serena: Here, I have something for you guys: "Adventure Rules."
Um... I already read that on my computer back at home.
Serena: I wrote down 10 different tips every Trainer should know.
And I'll probably know them all already.
Serena: Here's one for you!
'Shimohi obtained the Adventure Rules! Shimohi put the Adventure Rules in the KEY ITEMS Pocket.'
(But...back in the forest...) That was due to my usual kleptomania, this was a gift, that's different!
Serena: If you are puzzled about something, try looking in these rules.
Shauna: Oh, this is great! I'm going to spend some time getting to know my Li'l Chespin! [music note] What are you going to do, Shimo?
Something similar to what you're doing, sort of... Exploring the route while training my new friends, and maybe getting more new friends! (Yeah!) Well, I sneaked though a patch of grass to avoid being seen... (That's now five dollars from you!) ...and now I feel as awesome as Solid Snake! (Better check to make sure that's an actual Trainer.) If you insist... yes, it was...
Kid: Mommy told me that I should battle anyone who greets me!
'You are challenged by Preschooler Oliver!'
(Wait!? Where's your wand, and isn't your mother dead?) Wrong game, Akurei! Oliver sends out a Caterpie while I'm sending out Sparkle. (I'm going to get that promotion eventually! Count on it!) And in two Thunder Shocks, it's down. Next is going to be an Azurill. No, I'm not switching! Sparkle's going to have...a ball! (Boo!) Thunder Shock! For great justice! Well...it took more Thunder Shocks than I thought. (Apparently electric attacks are 'not' supper effective against Azurill for some reason...) Good news is that Sparkle leveled up! (Yeah! Eat that, sticky black bug!) But...she also learned Growl. Oh well, I defeated Oliver.
Oliver: Mommy told me to be polite, especially when I lose!
And your mama taught you well...
'Shimohi received [Pokedollar]64 for winning!'
Oliver: Mommy didn't tell me to, but I'm going to play with my Pokemon!
And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, go right ahead. I walk down a hill and...
???: Coming through!
What was that...? Well, I do a bit of exploring when... while avoiding a little girls eyes...I end up in the line of of sight of someone else...
Schoolgirl: Hey! My Pokemon and I are studying! Wanna join us?
'You are challenged by Schoolgirl Bridget!' (It's a trap!) No, she isn't...
'Schoolgirl Bridget sent out Bidoof.' Go Sparkle! Give that Bidoof the shock of her life! (Oh, you'll see a shock!) After two Thunder Shocks, Sparkle is in trouble! Switch! Hopefully Sosaruyaku can hold his own... nope, he's in trouble as well. (Den why you send me out there!?) Nukibata! I choose you! It's time for a Tackle-fest! And... I win!
Bridget: Just studying isn't enough! I need to practice more with real battles!
'Shimohi received [Pokedollar]192 for winning!'
And now I'm going to go into town, or rather, the city. And heal my Pokemon and call it a day. Wait what?
Tierno: Oh! Hey there, Shimo! Are you here to get your Pokemon healed, too?
Yeah... why you ask...?
Tierno: Pokemon Centers sure are great. You can talk to the lady at the counter and have her heal your Pokemon. And you can even deposit Pokemon you've caught in that PC! Know how Pokemon are sent to a PC when you've caught more than you can carry?
(Yeah, he's know about how Pokemon Centers and the PC Storage System works since roughtly the mid Nineteen-nineties.)
Tierno: That's where they go!
Well, this explanation is for those who where in the same position I was in back when I played Pokemon Blue Version for the first time. (Fair enough...)
Tierno: Oh yeah, Shimo! There's a Poke Mart in the back of a Pokemon Center. It's a good idea to stock up on Poke Balls and Potions and stuff at the Poke Mart, too.
Well, time to get my friends healed up... Oh! What's this shop located to the left of the Pokemon Center counter?
Employee: There's a fitting room in the back there. You can change in a flash!
Okay and... I don't have anything to change into... I'll have to come back latter. Well, there is this TV screen just outside the fitting room...
Nadia: Ciao! My name is Nadia. I'm a fledgling Rising Star! What I have in my Bag today is a Smoke Ball. A Smoke Ball is a mysterious item! Let a Pokemon hold it, and the Pokemon can flee for sure!
(Like a ninja!)
Nadia: I wish it had the same effect on me, too... When I'm about to lose against my opposing Trainer. I would escape by the Smoke Ball! Then the number of lost battles would not increase...
Huh... That's called "Rage Quitting" and it's an annoying move of a jerk...
Nadia: Haha. [music note] Let's have a great day, everybody!
'...Keep watching?'
-Yes-
-No-
Not really... Well, I'm plenty stocked up on Poke Balls and Potions... Now wear can I get some new threads...? (How about that shop with the shirt sign next door.) Good idea! I walk in and... a sales lady walks up to me.
Sales Lady: Welcome. If you'd like, check the items at the back of the shop.
Well, that teal hat looks nice... but this purple-haired guy is standing in front of it already.
Purple-haired guy: You know, the inventory of shops like this one can be completely different from one store to the next.
Well, I looked at the hats that are actually for sale and...why couldn't hey have any hats in blue or purple feathers? I'm going to ask that dude over there...
Dude: This shop specializes in hats and accessories. Should I get a hat? I dunno...
Well, I looked around the town to see if I could find any other clothing shops. I found three cafes... (What the heaven...?!) ...but no other clothing stores. So I'm going to save a call it a day, or rather night. Good night!
----------------------------
Well, that was a good first day for this Pokemon Journey! See you tomorrow!
Monty Python Reference Jar
Akurei: $13
